Ringland-Johnson completes historic restoration: Roosevelt Building in Clinton, Iowa

Ringland-Johnson Construction's most recent historic restoration: the Roosevelt Building in Clinton, Iowa. The former Roosevelt School is on the national Register of Historic Places.

CLINTON, Iowa (KWQC) – Historian Mike Kearney says the Roosevelt Building is part of the fabric of downtown Clinton. The building with its brick façade and stylish architecture is an important piece of the city’s history.

It was the original Clinton Public Library. The building was home to Clinton High School from 1888-1922. Later, it became an elementary school.

The tower is the place where high school students made their mark. They carved their names in bricks. One of those signatures belonged to 1916 graduate Frederick “Duke” Slater.

Slater was the Clinton High football tackle who played without wearing a helmet throughout high school. He later starred at Iowa and eventually became a judge.

The original wood floors, exquisite stair case, and classroom blackboards remain intact. Part of a multi-million dollar restoration at Roosevelt School Apartments on South Fourth Street.

At one time, the building was regarded as the finest high school in Iowa. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Community Housing Initiatives owns the building. Ringland-Johnson is the general contractor for the renovation.
